Nat Geo Dives Belize

The husband and wife team of Carrie Miller and Chris Taylor, who work for National Geographic are on an ambitious one year assignment - to cover the 50 most best dive destinations in the world.

They are compiling National Geographic's first dive travel guidebook - and are on the society's longest assignment every.

This week it's Belize and they told us why they are here:

Carrie Miller, Writer - National Geographic
"We came up with this idea for this dive travel guide book which is the world first and we pitched the idea to National Geographic and they loved it and so we are traveling for 1 year continuously. We started at the end of March this year and we are finishing up in the end of March 2019. So Belize is number nine on our places. We still have 41 to go."

"When we canvassed a lot of divers and travelers to find out what kind of destinations they would recommend, they were interested in. Belize always came up for divers, hands down. It's legendary in dive circles, but what we found out is that most divers said I wish I had more time on land. I wish I had more time to explore. I wish I had known about. And so that's why we really wanted to promote the Blue Hole. It's something that everybody knows. But we wanted to promote a different side of Belize in a different personality in it. There are different things that you can do from the rainforest to ruins to culture and so that's why we decided to focus on that particular area."

Chris Taylor, Dive Master - National Geographic
"I decided to look at the southern reefs, so Southwater Caye in particular and the area around there. Mainly because it's a very good overall dive site. So it has a wide range of different opportunities. So there is a wide range of diving for more skilled people and less skilled people and also because its a little bit quieter."

Carrie Miller, Writer - National Geographic
"The way that we are designing and writing this book is we are not jamming in every fact and figure and thing to do that we can come across. We are giving a kind of an overview and we are spending some word count in time on that overview, kind of telling more of a story and hopefully letting people discovery it for themselves."

The team will visit Gladden Split, Bocawina, South Water Caye Marine Reserve, the Abyss/Fourth Cut, Tobacco Caye and Man O'War Caye among others.
