Alleged Teenaged Killer Caught
posted (May 30, 2018)

In another high profile murder case, police have finally managed to re-capture 18 year-old Jordan Burns, the accused murderer who escaped from custody 5 days ago.

Burns was arrested and charged with the murder of 34 year-old Carlton Moreira last week Friday. But, while police were escorting him without handcuffs to the main police station, he slipped them and skipped through the main gate of the station's compound.

Well, this morning, they tracked him down, and this time, they made sure to keep him in secure detention.

We asked Deputy Commissioner Chester Williams about his re-capture:

DCP Chester Williams - Commander of Operations
"Mr. Burns was recaptured this morning and is expected to or have already appeared in court this afternoon charged with one count of murder and one count of escape and again we continue to go after persons aggressively when we know persons out there have committed a crime, it is our duty to investigate and do out ought most best to bring them to justice and we have been very stern on that. We believe that the quicker we work on these cases the better it is and the quick work of the police has always yielded good results and we want to assure the Belizean people as the police department we will continue to do our ought most best to make sure these crime do not occur but when they do occur that we can solve them with their support and the public has been very generous to the police in terms of assisting us with information and statements with made us make arrest in these cases and we want to ensure that support goes through, right through the trails so we can get convictions at the end of the day."

Daniel Ortiz
"Sir will the officer who ought to have been guarding this gentleman be facing any kind of disciplinary charges for the escape?"

DCP Chester Williams
"The matter is being dealt with internally and it is still being looked at to see what course of action will be taken against the officer. Whilst yes the prisoner may have escaped from the officer, we have to see whether there was level of negligence on the part of the individual officer so I don't want to prejudge his actions, I rather wait for the investigation to be concluded then make a determination from there."

As the Deputy Commissioner indicated, Burns was arraigned this evening before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford on the charges of murder, escaping from lawful custody, attempt robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery.

After reading the charges to him, Senior Magistrate Ford explained that she will not take a plea from him, and neither can he be granted bail. Burns was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his next court date, which is scheduled for August 15.
