Jordan Burns, Did Police Help Make Him Bad?
posted (May 31, 2018)
And one new prisoner joining their ranks is Jordan Burns. The teenager was arraigned yesterday for the murder of a man twice his age, Carlton Moreira. It was a shocking crime because Moreira was from the Mayflower neighborhood - and so was Burns. Supposedly, the 18 year old killed the older man because Moreira had stopped Burns from robbing a friend. And because of that, Moreira was dead in just a few hours.

But - if he did indeed do it - how does an 18 year old end up so armed, deadly and quick to kill? Well, there are probably many, many circumstances that converge to create a teenaged killer - and police are a part of the mix as well. In areas such as Mayflower the cops are often viewed as the bad guys, while the gang figures who feed and protect the neighborhood are the good guys. It may seem to outsiders to be an upside down world, but a very real one.

In 2017, we spoke to Moreira who had just been bullied by the GSU - and he expressed his youthful frustration with police tactics:...

"I just want to say that they are taking advantage of people for no reason."

"3-4 times they [police] are shooting people for no reason. I was at my friend's house and the police just burst in firing shots."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Do you think that the actions of the police encountering this young man over the years and handling him roughly. Do you this has any effect on creating a young man who allegedly at the age of 18, walks up to someone known to him from the neighborhood and just kills him in broad daylight?"

Wilfredo Ferrufino - Inspector, CIB
"No, I don't think that's the situation. I don't have the motive in regards to the murder, but I don't think that the situation. I don't think that the police created any or cause anybody to go and murder anyone, despite what encounters they may have had with the police."
