The Study Of Special Ed
posted (May 31, 2018)
As a part of Education month, the Ministry of Education has hosted several events targeted at assisting teachers and students. The main focus has been literacy and to end off the month they had one last conference but this one was about special education. The event was called Building Bridges and it drew upon a line up of presenters from Belize, Australia and the United States. We found out from two experts about the importance of this special education conference.

Candy Armstrong, Director Education Support Services/Ministry of Education
"Today we have a building bridges conference. It is a partnership between the Ministry of Education and The University of Nevada Las Vegas. We have with us professors from different Universities in Australia and the US along with our Belizean special education officers who will do presentations for teachers and different stakeholders and teachers that work with students or youths with disabilities. During the presentation, it is an opportunity to look at current research and to share best practices."

"This is education month and as a part of the activities that we have for this month we look at capacity building and gaps in which we can benefit from partnership in order to improve and so we just thought it was fitting considering some of the strides and gills that we have in education to look further at building capacities of teachers as the practitioners in the classroom so that again they get exposed to those current research practices so that it influences them."

Dr. Monica Brown, University of Nevada Las Vegas/ Organizer Building Bridges
"It really is symbolic of what we are trying to do in terms of building those collaborations across the world. Yes we may be in the United States, we may be in Australia, we may be in Cypress but we all have a common goal and mission to build those bridges between these countries to do as much as we can in terms of inclusion for as many kids as we can so it is really that feeling of we want to reach across and have other people share as much as we can share."

The Building Bridges team will be visiting different schools tomorrow to observe and assist.
