Today at the Michele Perdomo Art Center at SJC, a total of 52 awards were distributed to students. These awards were for those who had captured something no math or science test can: the spark of creativity.
We stopped by and spoke to a proud teacher about all the unique pieces his students created.

"We have tried to look at all the different elements of creativity that we see from our students whether it is visual art, painting, drawing, graphic design. Whether it is historical creativity from history class, debating, performing arts, spoken word poetry, singing and we have even tried to look at things that they do outside of the system like Youtube channel and memes that they are so into. It is kind of a cross-section, a buffet and this is our first time we are doing it with such emphasis on the student in terms of what they produce that is the big thing."
"We are giving them a certificate called the creative award certificate as well as a gift. Most of the gifts are books or educational things. Special drawing pencils, pens, colour pencils, things like that. Obviously it more than just the symbolic gift which is important to them. It is important to show that we value and appreciate what they do. That is to me the significant part of this."
