One For The Books: Librarian Robbed
posted (June 1, 2018)
And from that lawless home invasion - to the robbery of…a library? We know, you might be saying, who robs a library? But that's just what a young man did yesterday. It happened in broad daylight at the Lake Independence Library on Mahogany Street - which is right next to the police substation.

38 year old Librarian Bernard Louis Timmons told us that at around 10:30, he was doing his work when a young man came in seeming to make an innocent inquiry. He asked to appear off camera:..

Voice of: Bernard Timmons, Librarian
"A young man came asking for someone. I had no idea who he was looking for. I told him that no one works here by that name, so he needs to check down more at the pantry, because there is a pantry right beside the library. So the young man went by the pantry and he turn back and looked at me and walked through the gate. But while he was walking away I looked at my colleague and I told him that this young man looks suspicious. Now whilst sitting down about 10-15 minutes after that the young man came back. But when he came back, he rushed in the library and pulled out a firearm, aimed it at me and told me to give him everything. I looked at him and I told him that I don't have anything. He looked at me and said to give him my chain. Then I realize that I had on my chain. I took off the chain and I gave it to him. He looked at me and said give me your wallet too. So I pulled out the wallet out my pocket and I threw it at him. When I did that, he looked at me and said to give him my keys too, because I had my bunch of keys on the desk with my car, home, work keys and so on. I threw the keys at him and he picked up the keys, put everything in his pocket and he walked away. While walking out the library and still having the gun pointed at me, he put the gun in his pocket and he turn around and ran."

"I set chased after him. While doing that he slowed down and engaged me with the firearm again and then I realize that I need to back up. So I stepped back and I ran back to the police station, tried to get the assistance of the police. None of them came. So I had to basically beg them to please come and assist me - I just got robbed. I am the librarian and so they started to scramble for their motorcycle key and they took a circle around the neighborhood, but the criminal was already gone."

"It's sad to see that hard working Belizean like myself and others are being prayed on by these criminal elements."

The chain was valued at four thousand dollars, and the wallet had in $225.00 in cash.

Police have not made any arrests.
