A Scientific Plan For Nature
posted (June 1, 2018)
NBSAP: It stands for the National Biodiversity Strategy Action Plan. It was launched yesterday at the Falcon Field in San Ignacio. The plan is pretty much self-explanatory. The focus is ensuring that Belize's natural resources and all the diverse species and ecosystems are protected and safeguarded. Here is more from the event.

Percival Cho, CEO - Ministry of Environment
"Biodiversity is the sum of all life on earth. That's from bacteria to blue whales. From the fungus to the redwood tree in California. Millions of species of plants and animals are what we referred to as biodiversity of the earth. One startling fact is that never before in the history of earth has one out of millions of species had such dominion over all others. Human-kind have over 8 billion presently on earth, has now spun the earth into what we called the Anthropocene, which is an era of unpresented biodiversity loss; pollution, land cover change, over exploitation of natural resources and climate change."

"Scientist across the world agree that impacts we are causing will leave a permanent record in the geological history of this earth. Global leaders having that knowledge at hand agree that action is necessary to halt the unprecedented loss of biodiversity."

Hon. Omar Figueroa, Minister of State/Sustainable Development
"Twenty-five years ago Belize, like many other countries signed on to the United Nations convention on biological diversity. In so doing, we committed of doing our part as one of many nations around the world to manage and use biodiversity wisely for the benefit of all humanity."

"The national biodiversity strategy and action plan is Belize's principal instrument for executing our natural resource management actions. Our commitment to develop and implement the NBSAP sends a clear signal of the importance our government places on our natural capital. The NBSAP is the result of years of work and was prepared through many consultations with all our partners. It highlights Belize's vision, goals and targets for the biodiversity we are blessed with."

A copy of the plan was given to a number of stakeholders.
