Antigua, Guatemala, Out of The Ashes

Earlier on in the news we told you about the dozens dead, and the thousands displaced by the volcano in Guatemala. As many as 1.7 million people have been affected by the volcano's huge footprint of lava and ash rains.

That includes one of the country's top tourist attractions - the historic city of Antigua Guatemala - which is only 9 miles from the Volcan De Fuego.

In 2013 Jules Vasquez visited the city for an OAS General Assembly - and found that apart from history, Antigua is also surrounded by its own volcanic mountains, including the Volcan De Agua. Here's the travelogue of his visit to the city:…

The good news for Antigua is that after the ash rain which coated the city, municipal leaders carried out an aggressive cleaning and basic services such as electricity, water and internet have not been affected - so, they are open for visitors.
