posted (June 6, 2018)

Today the Central American Commission on Environment and Development met at the Radisson. The main focus was to discuss the work they have done to safeguard the reef and also what more can be done. Here's more from the meeting.

Salvador Nieto - Executive Secretary, Central American Commission on Environment & Development
"We are here since yesterday in a two day meeting regarding the Mesoamerican Reef. We are part of a Mesoamerican initiative for reef rescue and we are discussing the works we have been doing in the last years and also the plans for future years in the reef rescue initiative." The Mesoamerican reef is very important for the Central American integration system because it is the second most important in the world. And then we have this initiative, some activities regarding insurance for example, trying to establish mechanism for insurance of the reef against climate change, tropical storms and several events that can occur and damage the reef. We also have activities in small grants for local initiatives that try to restore the reef. A lot of initiatives that contribute to the conservation of the reef. Belize is very committed with these initiatives because you understand very well how important it is for the economy, biodiversity, and for the environment in general."

Representatives from Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and Mexico attended the meeting.  In more good reef news, as we told you a draft decision has been taken to de list the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System as a World Heritage Site in Danger. The Final decision of the World Heritage Committee will be made at the end of June at UNESCO's 42nd meeting in Bahrain.
