Deputy Hyde Says Party Should Have Let Dr. Pitts Challenge Usher
posted (June 7, 2018)
And on that note, should the PUP have allowed Dr. Candice Pitts - who was one of Hyde's city council candidates to challenge Gilroy Usher in a convention? Usher is a Bricenista - and it is widely accepted that his clout and calling in a few chits with the party leader - is what tipped the scales against Dr. Pitts candidacy. The vetting committee told her she couldn't run. Hyde says his party made the wrong decision on that one:...

"So then should Dr. Pitts have been given a fair opportunity to contest Port Loyola?"

Hon. Cordel Hyde, PUP Deputy Leader
"Of course. Because my position is this, if you can't win a contested convention, you don't deserve to be standard bearer. But once you go through that, once you come out of that, you are ready for the general election beyond ready and I just like in hindsight the party got it wrong in Port Loyola. That's my belief."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"So then you have a disagreement with the leadership of the party. I know it's the vetting committee - all of that. But at the end of the day the leadership of the party is the one who has to give a little wink."

Hon. Cordel Hyde, PUP Deputy Leader
"When you look back you can always say we should have done it this way, we should have done it that way. I think we have to learn from when we went wrong. At the end of the day if you are going to allow a challenge in Albert, then you should have allowed a challenge in Port Loyola, you should allow challenge everywhere else."
