Taiwan Helps Howell
posted (June 7, 2018)
Southside Commander Howell Gillett has been on what seems like an unstoppable roll when it comes to helping young people on the southside of Belize City. He has started an urban farming project at the schools so kids can stay away from trouble and eat a healthy meal. Today the Taiwan Embassy donated over $5,000 to help him sustain the projects in more schools. We stopped by and heard more from the happy donor and recipient.

Sr. Supt Howell Gillett, Southside Commander
"It will reach out to. Three different schools. I believe it is St. Johns Vianney, St Martins, and St Luke all one region one side of Belize City. Why we are doing this is because we believe if we help young people from a very early age and how can you be a productive student if you are not able to have a meal especially a breakfast in the morning or lunch so what we are doing is to create farming in these schools and then whatever is reaped is augmented and helped in the feeding program for the school. We want to help young people."

"You might say it is only three schools but the Ministry of Education has undertaken to sponsor the fourth school as result of the effort that we displayed. First, we approached the Social Security Board but that did not materialize so we went to the Taiwanese Ambassador and right away he said yes we will try to fund the project. It is good and it is for young people. We are so very pleased, this is a great day for us. Approximately 1,500 kids will be impacted by this and the teachers are the ones who will determine who gets food from the feeding program as well as what goes to the feeding program from the farming in schools."

H.E Charles Liu, Taiwanese Ambassador- Belize
"Commander Howell Gillett has been doing a very good job while he was commander in Belmopan City to help the kids. To learn how to do their farming at school so that is why I kept them away from the gang and away from the crimes. It has very good effects not only for the kids but also good for the communities so this is why I do believe Commander Howell Gillett opened the doors for the schools to learn how to educate the kids in the farming. This is the kind of act that will stop the crimes."

Saint Martins Dep Porres, St Lukes Methodist, and Saint Johns Vianney Primary will reap the benefits of the donations. The Ministry of Agriculture is also pitching in to help them donate to one more school: All Saints Primary.

After the handing over the Ambassador and Commander Gillett toured region one and handed out footballs to different schools.
