Alleged Highway Robber Remanded
posted (June 8, 2018)
23 year-old Demas Zelaya, a resident of Belize City, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison tonight. Police say that he was one of the pretend cops in a police uniform who carried out that daring broad-daylight robbery of NICH employees on the old Northern Highway.

As we reported in May, 3 NICH employees were driving when they came upon what looked like a police checkpoint. They saw 2 men, 1 dressed in a black police uniform, and the other in a camouflage uniform.

The NICH employees dutifully stopped at the checkpoint, only to be robbed of their cell phones, a loaded 9 millimeter pistol and an envelope with over four thousand dollars in cash.

Police investigated and charged Zelaya with 2 counts of robbery. He was arraigned today before Magistrate Michelle Trapp, who carefully considered whether or not she should grant him bail. He told the court that he is a father of 2 young children, and that he has 4 witnesses who can tell the court that at the time of this robbery, he was at home.

After hearing from the police prosecutor, Magistrate Trapp remanded him to the Belize Central Prison until August 9th.
