So many times on the news - you hear about "items labelled as found property" - and pretty much that's the end of it. But, these items, especially if they are firearms, can have an important afterlife as evidence if a match is found in ballistics testing.
Sources tell 7News that's just what happened with this 9 millimeter pistol which was found tucked under a house on Dolphin street two months ago. We are told that ballistics tests on the firearm show that it may have been used in a the 2015 murder of businessman Ruben Perez.
In November of 2015, Perez was behind his desk at his aggregate business at the corner of Vernon Street when and Western Avenue when two men entered, and, after a struggle, one of them shot him in the neck. It was a robbery attempt.
Two teenagers, 18 year old Keon Dennison and 19 year old Tyrone Reid were charged for the murder and remain on remand pending trial.
