Man Shot In Head While Visiting Cousin For Memorial Svc.
posted (June 11, 2018)
Tragedy struck a Roaring Creek family for the second time this weekend. First, their loved one, 22 year old Oswald Arnold went missing 26 days ago and is feared dead, and then on Saturday night, his cousin, 22 year old Eugene Henderson Jr. was shot to the head. Remarkably, Henderson survived but he is in a bad way at the KHMH. Courtney Weatherburne has the story.

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
A living room sofa now just a mound of ash in Natalee Arnold's back yard. Although the flames consumed it,

Nothing can block out the frantic screams or erase the gruesome image of Eugene Henderson Jr. bleeding out on that couch after he was shot to the head.

On Saturday, relatives from all over gathered at Arnold's Roaring Creek house for a family function that was to be held on Sunday afternoon.

But on Saturday night around 10:00, a gunman crept up from the back of the house and shot Henderson who was asleep on the sofa by the door.

Voice of: Natalee Arnold, Aunt
"I was upstairs cleaning the chicken because we were supposed to have a memorial service for my nephew Oswald who we haven't found yet. And we were trying to do the best for him by having the memorial so I was seasoning the chicken in my kitchen and upon finish seasoning the chicken I went and separate them in different dish pan that I had seasoned them in and when going outside to wash the dish pan at my faucet at the front verandah and as I approached the front door I heard the gunshot."

Courtney Weatherburne, reporter
"As you said a lot of kids were around?"

Voice of: Natalee Arnold, Aunt
"All my grandkids, my little nephews, my niece, all of them were in the downstairs with them."

Henderson's father was also downstairs with him and he was one of the first to rush over to help him.

Voice of: Eugene Henderson Sr. Father
"I was sitting down in another sofa downstairs about 10 feet from him along with a cousin and all I heard was one gunshot and bang and my focus went on my son who got hit. I don't know who it was, I didn't see anything. I just heard the gunshot and I run to my son."

"My first reaction is try to save his life, just try save his life and get him to the hospital."

And that's where Henderson Jr. is tonight - fighting to stay alive in the hospital after a shot gun pellets pierced the side of his head. The doctors say he has a 50/50 chance of survival. It is a miracle that he survived in the first place so the family is remaining hopeful. But what still plagues that family is why anyone would want Henderson dead. His aunt says Henderson wasn't in Roaring Creek long enough to have made any enemies.

Voice of: Natalee Arnold, Aunt
"I don't know what the motive is or what were these guys intentions because my nephew who got shot he is someone who never come up here to start any problem with anyone, they were just here for the memorial service for my nephew."

Courtney Weatherburne
"Eugene, your nephew is from Burrell Boom."

Voice of: Natalee Arnold, Aunt
"He is Burrell Boom, they don't come up here, they don't know anybody from Roaring Creek."

Henderson's father doesn't have any concrete answers either.

Courtney Weatherburne
"So you shock right now, you no know why anybody would want kill him or target the target the family?"

Voice of: Eugene Henderson Sr. Father
"No I still in shock, even though I was there and I saw it and still don't know, we will just leave it up to God and try make we son recover."

The family is planning a BBQ sale on Saturday to help pay for the mounting hospital bills. If you want to help them you can call 605-4151 or 632-2341.
