Armed Robbers Target Northside
posted (June 11, 2018)
Last week we showed you how the police had significantly stepped up their presence and patrols on Albert Street after a string of armed robberies. The immediacy of that presence was felt today when a vagrant snatched a handful of clothing from Juanita's store on Albert Street. MIT officers who are posted on the block set chase immediately and caught him one block away at the corner of Dean and Regent Streets.

So while the increased presence on Albert Street is paying dividends in a safe downtown, armed criminals seem to now be looking for opportunities in less heavily patrolled areas - and that means the Northside of Belize City.

On Saturday evening gunmen pounced on Moon Grocery Store on Coney Drive. The 50-year-old owner, Guo Jin Li told police that around 3:30 three men entered the store. One of them pulled out a gun and demanded money. Li complied and forked over $700 in cash. And if that wasn't enough, the robbers then held up two customers who had the misfortune of being in the store, stealing a cellphone and a wallet. No arrests have been made.

And, this afternoon D Creole Wagons in the Kings Park area was robbed. Reports are that four armed men with black shirts entered the store and stole on E Street. At this time, it is unclear what exactly was stolen - but we saw the police scenes of crime team and CIB officers there speaking to the owner. We will update you in tomorrow's news.
