A sergeant of police was shot in Belize City on Saturday night. 43 year old Shawn Walton was on Victoria Street visiting someone when he was grazed in the arm. Polcie told us more:..

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino
"He was visiting someone in the area and he was seated in his vehicle awaiting that individual and that was when he was injured. He felt a burning sensation on his arm and he realized that he was shot. He was taken to the hospital. We are seeking two persons in regards to that incident."

"The investigation is still ongoing and we can't confirm at this point if he was indeed the intended target, but we are looking into it."

"There were other persons in the area nearby to his vehicle and so like I said the investigation is ongoing to try to determine if he was in deed the target or it was the other individuals around the area."

"You all have a multiplicity of checkpoints in that area, it is probably per square foot the most secure, theoretically, the most secure area in the country. Were you all able to determine where the shots came from and immediately locate and identify the suspects?"

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino
"No. In regards to this incident the suspects, the incident happened approximately a hundred and fifty feet from the checkpoint which is located at the corner of New Road and Victoria Street. This incident happened more towards the corner of North Front Street and Victoria Street, so the culprits made their escape down Victoria and on to North Front Street."

Watlon has been treated and released. One suspect was detained today.
