Mayor Beats Councilor In OW East Race
posted (June 11, 2018)
1800 voters came out in Orange Walk East yesterday to select their new PUP Standard Bearer. It was an interesting convention that pitted the incumbent Orange Walk mayor Kevin Bernard against one of his own town councillors Josue Carballo who was the PUP's losing candidate in that division in 2015.

CTV-3 was there when the winner was announced:...

Henry Charles Usher, PUP Chairman
"Receiving 827 votes was Mr. Josue Carballo. Receiving 935 votes is Mayor Kevin Bernard. So the new PUP standard bearer for Orange Walk East is Mayor Kevin Bernard."

Kevin Bernard, PUP Standard Bearer - OW East
"I Call on all of you our supporters to join hands with Josue and his team and let us walk to victory for the PUP."

Reporter
"Can you ensure Orange walkenos that there will be no bad blood between you guys?"

Josue Carballo, Town Councillor
"I was elected by the people of Orange Walk Town, so who I have to respond to is to them and if they have given me this mandate to continue in the town council, I shall at the best if my ability like I have always done since 2009 and nothing will change about that."

Bernard edged out Carballo by 108 votes. There will be another contested convention on Sunday, this one in Albert between Paul Thompson and challenger Valerie Woods.
