Civic and The Storm To Come
posted (June 13, 2018)

We spoke with Elrington when he joined NEMO Minister Edmond Castro on a tour of the Belize Civic Center - which is being reviewed for emergency purposes.

It's part of Castro's tour and inspection of all of Belize City's emergency facilities, in preparation for the Hurricane season.

At the end of the tour, Castro told the press that the intention of the Government is that, in the event of a hurricane or some other natural disaster, the Civic - which is built to withstand a category four hurricane -will be used to house security services as well as the KHMH's most critical emergency services.:

Hon. Edmond Castro
"The purpose of today's tour is a combination of NEMO and CEMO touring the civic center and some of the other possible sites for the EOC in case of emergency and shelters for the most vulnerable, in the hospital KHMH and other medical institutions, the police, the BDF, the coast guard and to see how best in the event of a category 3, 4 or 5 that we could take care of those people and be back quickly to respond to those who are in need."

"I see you're concentrating on having the KHMH housed here, why?"

Hon. Edmond Castro
"This area is best, it's the first time we have a facility in the country that can evacuate the entire medical institutions, the KHMH and the others - medical associates and so we could bring them here and fully functioning. You will be able to conduct emergency surgery, you will be able to operate as a full-fledged hospital. Child birth, child delivery, this and that so I think for the first time we have a facility that the medical people from KHMH, the matrons, the CEO find that is best suited for that kind of thing, even the ramp that could bring up patience in their bed and that kind of thing. Man it's a remarkable building, it's nice, I believe with the generator that is housed here with 10 thousand gallons of fuel can actually operate the entire building for up to 2 weeks so we don't have nothing else in this country that can provide the AC facility, the electricity generation that we need. So I think this is best for emergency purposes."
