Protecting The Protectors

Doctor checkups are something police officers seldom get the chance to do due to their busy and demanding schedules. And the perils of long, stressful hours are well known.

That's why Southside Commander Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett decided to do something about it.  He worked out a partnership with Word of Work Ministries in the United States for a few doctors to come down to Belize and give Police officers a check-up - right at the station! Over 100 officers got a wellness check-up today. We stopped by to find out more about this initiative.

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett - Southside Commander
"What we are doing for them is all of us know that our officers are working long hours and it is hard for them to take the time to go to the hospital where they will have to wait in another line so we decided to partner with a group of Americans through the church word of work to bring a doctor here at the Racoon Street Police Station. I believe since mid-morning almost 50 officers have been seen and I am getting reports our officers are doing ok there are others who need to do some exercise to try and get on the balance. It is a way of telling our officers, yes we care about them and we want them to have good health despite the challenges, despite the workload. We want them to know their vitals so that they can take action early enough to save lives."

Dr. Diana Gilbert - Internal Medicine Doctor/Word of Work
"I think it is wonderful that we can come in and get them a physical exam and hopefully we can do even more next year. We find some problems that they did not know that they had. We can help them with medications with problems that they already knew about and then say we will be back next year and we can get you checked again."

Southside Commander Gillett says that officers from all regions were treated to a free check-up.
