Belize Helps Guatemala
posted (June 15, 2018)
Relief efforts continue in Guatemala after the Volcan de Fuego erupted on June 3rd - killing at least 110 people, while several are still missing. But there is hope for the survivors. As we told you, the Guatemalan Government has asked for assistance with supplies and equipment. Several countries including Belize and humanitarian organizations have answered their call. In a release sent out today by the Guatemalan Embassy, the Guatemalan Government thanks the Government and people of Belize for reaching out in this time of great need. Quote, "The Embassy of Guatemala would like to…highlight and re-iterate its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation ...for the in-kind and material humanitarian aid given towards those who were affected by the eruptions." It makes special mention of Belizean civilians like Nataly Moh from Benque who organized gathering centers all over Belize. All the items that were collected countrywide were sent to Guatemala on Wednesday. So while these relief items will go a long way, there is still A LOT that needs to be done to get to some state of normalcy. The next phase is the reconstruction of houses. The release ends by saying " The Government of Guatemala is making an international aid appeal, with the purpose of building a thousand homes which will cost 10 million US dollars."

And like a good neighbor, Belize has already stepped in with $50,000 US dollars in aid. In a Government release it states, "In solidarity with the people of Guatemala, the Government of Belize has decided to make a financial contribution of $50,000 US dollars towards Guatemala's relief efforts.

The Government of Belize conveys again its condolences to the Government and people of Guatemala." END QUOTE.

A true sign of humanity, good faith and diplomacy, regardless of the ongoing dispute between both countries.
