Restore Belize and the Youth and Community Transformation Project today concluded a week long training on conflict mediation. 19 persons including social workers, police and youth officers participated. We dropped by to find out how mediation can reduce violence.

Sandra Diaz - Cadle, Training Facilitator
"One of the 3 main tools that we focused on this week is one the whole effective communication, active listening, inquiry skills, how can they get information and learn to understand, move disputants from position to interest without mediators imposing their values, without mediators getting frustrated with the process and lastly the mediator as a facilitator."

"For this week they have been involved in a lot of practical sessions, role playing, relevant scenarios from the various organizations that they deal with on a daily basis, just to give them that kind of real sort of feeling so we have been doing that so today is the last day and we are spending today dealing with only practical."

Insp. Elroy Carcamo, OC, Community Policing
"The training has been fantastic from since we started out the training we have learned different procedures and rules on how to go about dealing with mediation."

Courtney Weatherburne, reporter
"How will you use some of these tools and techniques as a police officer it is very important in that regard."

Insp. Elroy Carcamo, OC, Community Policing
"Well we deal with a lot of youth and a lot of personalities within neighborhoods so this will be a great tool to assist us before taking it to court we can deal with it first and try to find the best solution with the participants then from there we decide where we move from there."

These participants will now have to complete 3 supervised sessions to get certified. 153 persons have been trained through this program.
