posted (June 18, 2018)
Tonight, a San Pedro Town family is in mourning following the accidental shooting of 6-year-old Daisy Acevedo by her 11-year-old brother. The little girl was shot in the neck and died shortly after. We went out to San Pedro this morning looking for answers.

Alex Courtenay reporting
6 year old Daisy Emily Acevedo lived in this San Pedro home with her mother, siblings and stepfather, Shamir Myvett. She and her 11 year old brother were getting ready for school as usual when the young boy somehow got a hold of Myvett's 9mm pistol and accidentally fired it. A single shot hit Daisy, who unfortunately succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"San Pedro Police responded to the San Pedro Polyclinic where they observed the lifeless body of a female child with apparent gunshot injuries to the neck area. Police have since detained one person in regards to this investigation, which is on going. One licensed, 9mm pistol has also been retrieved by the police pending this investigations."

Myvett, who only got his licensed gun last month, claims that the firearm was properly locked away. He has been detained and police are questioning him, to try to figure out how a child was able to access it.

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"From our investigations the police is being told that the gun was locked up inside a drawer in the home."

"So it could not be determined whether or not the child was playing with the gun or whether it was someone else mistakenly shot the baby?"

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"No not at this time, but the officers are canvassing the area as well as speaking to the person in custody."

While police are determining if Myvette should be charged with manslaughter or causing death by careless conduct, the 11 year old is currently receiving counseling to get him through this traumatic experience.

Myvett remains detained tonight, and his case file has been submitted to a legal adviser to determine what if any charge will be brought.
