UB Endowment Gives Education
posted (June 21, 2018)
5 students were awarded scholarships to pursue their Bachelor's degree at the University of Belize. Now as we have reported, the University is facing some serious financial challenges but President Sankat says he has found a way to source some extra funds and help the students out through an Endowment Fund that he launched last year. We found out more at the awards ceremony at the Princess.

Clement Sankat, President, University of Belize
"It is really the award of bursaries out of a fund that was launched last year. Last year when I came in we launched the endowment fund and many good Universities have that. It is a pot of money outside of the normal government subventions and tuition fees. Funds that can be used for developmental things like scholarships, bursaries to students, helping to put up new buildings and infrastructure and all of that, the University of Belize had zero, zero dollars. They didn't have a fund any at all so we just made a start last year and the big event we had last year, first time so it was a starter was the all-inclusive fete in September last year at the Birds Isle. We promised our sponsors that once we made a little money we will use that money to give bursaries and today we are fulfilling that promise. We have selected from many students who applied, many students 5 students who have won these bursaries on the basis of a combination of their needs and academic prowess so it is both and it was done by a selection team."

Maria Chun, Recipient
"I was glad that this was an opportunity because at the same time I was not able to pay my tuition for the next academic year so I applied, I got all my information and I make sure all my essays are revised. And then I received a call saying I was one of the lucky ones to receive a scholarship so I am very grateful for it because I know this will serve me a long way and I will do the best that I can do because this is an opportunity for me to pursue my Bachelors in Math education."

Delroy Coc, Recipient
"I came to know about this fund through the UB facebook page and I was in financial need and so I applied for it and I got it."

Courtney Weatherburne, reporter
"And you are going to study IT, Bachelors in Information Technology, have you always loved it?"

Delroy Coc, Recipient
"Yeah, I have always loved it, I like technology."

"I enjoy programming the most, in IT there are many departments and in the future I hope to learn more in each department."

As you heard one of the first events UB hosted to raise money for the fund was the September 1st all- inclusive fete. Well, UB is having their second big bash this September 1st. Sankat invites everyone to party for a good cause.

Clement Sankat, President, University of Belize
"One other big thing today, today we are announcing for the first time in the public the second all-inclusive fete to be held right here at the Ramada Princess, it is called a Caribbean Affair and it will be held at the Ramada on the 1st of September from 8pm to 2 am. It is an all-inclusive event so you come you party, you drink, you eat, you have a great time. And when you doing that you always remember you are contributing to a student's future success with a scholarship."

Sankat says they are still finalizing the cost but last year's ticket was $200. The artist lineup includes Pluto Shervington, Oscar B among others. It's called a Caribbean Affair.
