Belize Takes Over SICA
posted (July 2, 2018)
Belize took over the Pro-Tem Presidency of the regional body known as the Central American Integrated System, or SICA, and the state will hold leadership of this organization for the next 6 months.

On Saturday, Foreign Affairs Minister Wilfred Elrington received the Pro-Tem Presidency on behalf of PM Dean Barrow who - as you just heard - is headed to CARICOM. Elrington received the office in Santo Domingo from the President of the Dominican Republic, who is the outgoing President.

A Government press release notes that Minister Elrington pledged that Belize is in full support in advancing the efforts of the Republic on the implementation of SICA's regional Mandate.

Elrington also told the representatives of the other SICA nations that Belize will seek to consolidate the strengthening of relationships between both CARICOM and SICA.

Belize will hold the pro-tem presidency until December 2018, when it will be handed over to Guatemala.

And 3 days before that, Manuel Heredia Jr., the Belize Minister of Tourism, led a delegation on June 27 and 28 to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. They were there to participate in the 108th Ordinary Meeting of Central American Council of Tourism Ministers, as well as the 12th Ordinary Meeting of the Central American Tourism Promotion Agency.

At those meetings, the outgoing Pro-Tem President of the two organizations, the DR's Tourism Minister, Francisco Javier Garcia, held a ceremonial handing over where he transferred leadership to Minister Heredia, on behalf of Belize.
