A Book That Soars
posted (July 6, 2018)
One writer is bringing back the Kite flying culture in Belize with his new book entitled "Keron Flies his Kite." It's Harold Young's first children's book but it's more than just about kite flying - it is about a young boy's passion for kites and how he uses that passion to "seize the day". We were there for Young's book launch at the Image Factory...

Harold Young, Author
"The name of the book is "Keron flies his kite" so it is about this young boy who doesn't have a kite, loves kites, nobody wants to fly kites with him, even his brother doesn't have time so eventually he builds his own kite and that is the success story that he realizes that he can do it today, he doesn't have to put it off anymore and so the story ends with him flying his kite, his friends joining him and his brother joining him flying his big singer kite."

Courtney Weatherburne
"Have you always been writing children's books? Tell us briefly about your career as a writer?"

Harold Young, Author
"No this is my first children's book, I am actually a University professor so I write academic stuff but this has been my joy, it has given me so much joy. I have learned so much by doing this. It has just been a pleasure working with the artist, with Yasser and people who help review the book and this whole process has been really enlightening and exciting for me. Assimilating me to work on new books for kids because there is such a void, there are not a lot of book for kids especially written in Belize or by Belizeans."

Marvin Vernon, Illustrator
"From start to finish it was really fun working with the water color and getting to bring Harold's story to life. It was just an amazing process and I just want to say thanks you to Harold and to Yasser and to everyone who came together to make this project happen and seeing everybody come here today is really amazing for the book opening."

It is $20 to purchase a book but Young plans on giving 2 copies of his book to all elementary school across the country. That will take about a year to roll out. Some schools in the city have already gotten copies. Also, some of the proceeds from the sale of the book will go to high school scholarships for All Saints Primary School graduates.
