Chopping Victim Got Shot, Tesecum Tempts Fate With Another Near Fatal Injury
posted (July 12, 2018)
41 year-old Michael Tesecum, a resident of Tibruce Street, is in intensive care at the KHMH tonight, after he was shot multiple times last night.

It's the second attempt on his life in 7 months, and it comes at a time that he is struggling to recover from the last time someone tried to kill him. He suffered a severe eye injury when his co-worker, Dennis Bowden chopped him in the head with a machete, and the road to recovery has been very difficult. He was at risk of losing that eye to complications, and now, he must recover from gunshot wounds to the back, the stomach and the left foot.

So, how can one man be so unlucky? That's what our news team attempted to find out today. Daniel Ortiz has that story:

Daniel Ortiz reporting
41 year-old Michael Tesecum was rushed in the back of a police mobile to the KHMH for emergency medical attention due to life threatening, gunshot injuries.

That scene was quite reminiscent of December 18th of last year, when he was rushed to the KHMH, once again in the back of a pickup truck, after a co-worker chopped him in the head.

But, last night, someone shot him several times while he was just a short distance from his home on Tibruce Street.

Not much is known about the incident at this time, but police shared small details as they have been able to establish them so far:

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"Wednesday 11th, [2018] just after 7:30pm police also received information of several shots fired in the Tibruce Street area and as a result police visited the hospital where they observed Michael Tesecum with 3 apparent gunshot wounds to the body. He was treated and taken to surgery immediately because of the extent of the injury that he had received. Fortunately he was admitted and right now he is in a stable condition. What we understand is that Mr. Tesecum was walking on the street when he was approached by someone who fired several shots at his direction."

Tesecum suffered gunshot injuries to the back, the stomach, and the left foot, and at this time, he is recovering at the KHMH. That's not afforded police an opportunity to interview him about how the shooting actually happened. The cops are considering all possibilities, including one that this second attempt on his life is connected the December 2018 one.

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"I know that he had an altercation and he had received an injury to his head. The person was charged for that crime that was committed against him. But there is nothing up to now that is indicating to us that that is part of what took place last night. We understand that yes he had some misunderstanding with some family members last night and that might have triggered what happened to him. That is one of the angle that we are looking at this moment."

Reporter
"In terms of the firearm that was used in this particular shooting?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"There were several expended shells recovered. It was a 9mm..."

Reporter
"Are you questioning, I believe it's Mr. Bodden that was involve in that matter with Mr. Tesecum. We were made to understand he was release on bail. Are you questioning him any at all?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"The investigators are in the area canvassing to see what we can pick up and from there after whatsoever they get we will continue our investigation and if Mr. Bodden needs to be picked up, that will be done along with other persons or other suspects."

It's a possibility that the 2 recent and near deadly attacks on his life are connected, but back in March, Tesecum told 7News that he has already made peace with the co-worker who tried to chop him to death.

Michael Tesecum - Chopping/Shooting Victim

"Right now it's still traumatizing to me. I could have died, this guy wanted to kill me for no reason. I was surprised because that guy is a cool guy. I don't know what provoked him. In the tribunal meeting that we had there I asked him if he thinks I deserved it, he said 'no'. I moved beyond that, I forgave him. All I want is to live now."

Once again, he finds himself clinging to life, a man with a positive outlook, despite the great misfortune that has befallen him. He told us that he stays away from the street violence which followed him all the way to his neighborhood last night - and even wrote a poem about it.

"God is the answer, violence is not the answer. You see what happened to me just because a man cannot reason or a man cannot put god first. God is the answer, I forgive him."

Poem:
"Momma cry, her son just died. Every other day you hear a next youth died. Gun men put on mask and shoot at guy's heads. The city runs red, it's more full with dead. Back in the days they killed my boy Omar, I looked around the fence and saw the white car with fire from the nuzzle and smoke from a far. Belizean youths put down the gun, when you kill another youth, you kill a mother's son. Guns burst in the city and the town, gun burst, you killed a next mother's son. Gang bang is finished but crime is higher heights and off of rags and colors, the youths are fighting."

Tesecum remains in critical but stable condition at the KHMH. Police haven't made any arrests.

We approached his family for comment, and they declined.
