Why Newcomer Wants Cycling Presidency
posted (July 13, 2018)
Two night ago, we showed you our interview with Orson Butler, the current vice president of the Belize cycling Federation, who's now running for president. The man who is currently President, Dion Leslie will run as Vice President. It's a flip flop of the status quo, which has an appeal for continuity, but not for Alexi Ordonez and his slate. He is a newcomer, and his slate, who call themselves "Team Upward Bound" say this much loved sport needs a new direction. Today, we asked him whether he's up to the task:..

Alexi Ordonez, Seeking Presidency - BCF
"These guys have been given a chance and we see the results of that now. We are mandated by our constitution which right now we don't have a constitution that governs the body. Secondly, we don't have any annual general meetings for the past 4 years. So lack of communication on a whole. No kind of financial statements are being presented to the people to let us know what's going on and it's only fair to give us a fair shot."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Your critics will say what do he knows about cycling other than hear stories in the bike shop. How do you answer that?"

Alexi Ordonez
"Honestly, it's just not hearing the stories in the bike shop. My brother was a cyclist and so through his experience and one of my very good friends is Mr. Brandon Cattouse. Not only that. Ever since a child my dad had this bike shop. He was a former cyclists as well. My dad's dad was a cyclist. So it's in the blood."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Now how your opponents are presenting it? Sort of like well he doesn't know the statutes, he doesn't know the real in and out of how to run a federation. Also you need marketing knowledge. You need business knowledge, because obviously the federation is in the business of cycling as well. How do you answer that criticism and he, Orson summed it up by saying you are too young."

Alexi Ordonez
"Well it's not a solo mission. It's not just me alone. I have a team of people. You mentioned business people. I have business people on my team. I have marketing people on my team and cycling enthusiast on a whole. So it's not just a me thing. It's a collective."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Are you going to win tomorrow?"

Alexi Ordonez
"I will. The cyclists are the voice and they should turn out. I do believe that we bring the best to the table and that will show tomorrow."
