A Benque Viejo man was arraigned today at the Magistrate's court in Belize City. He is 27 year old Carlitos Valdez.
On Sunday July 15th at around 6:00 in the morning, Hattieville Police saw a grey Kia Sportage, driven by Valdez, in a suspicious driving mode as he approached a checkpoint. They searched it and found a bag containing several parcels of weed tightly wrapped in transparent tape. The bundles of ganja weighed about 20 pounds. Valdez was arrested and charged with drug trafficking.
In court today, he pleaded not guilty to the offense. Now, for drug charges of this magnitude bail is usually denied. However, given that it was Valdez's first run-in with the law and he had no previous convictions, the court offered him bail in the sum of $10,000 plus two sureties of $5,000 each. After meeting these conditions Valdez was released on bail. He is to return to court on September 13th for his next court hearing.
