Belize Bank, 7 Years Of Awarding Scholars
posted (July 17, 2018)
Today the Belize Bank awarded full scholarships to 20 Belizeans to pursue their secondary and tertiary education. Over 168 students applied for the scholarship but only the most deserving- based on criteria of necessity and academic performance- were selected.

The scholarship covers school fees, a book grant, tutoring classes and an integrated system of mentorship provided by the Belize Bank staff. We found out more:

Dr. Dian Danderson- Chief Inspector of Schools, MOE
"You as the student need to also realize this wonderful opportunity that is being gifted to you today. When you realize it for yourself then you are able to take action. I want this to be a beginning point for you all as well. So that you know that the set of circumstances have been set for you but you also need to do the action that comes with it. So, on behalf of the Ministry of Education Youth, Sports and Culture I congratulate each and everyone of you today and I also extend congratulations to your parents who are going to be your support throughout this process."

Lyndon Guiseppi- Chairman, Belize Bank Ltd.
"Now in it's seventh year and with today's award, the Belize bank is proud to have sponsored over 120 scholarship to deserving Belizean students in the past seven years. One of the key things we require is that they maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Now I want to emphasis that it is a minimum grade point average. We expect them to do much better than that. Every year, each student is required to submit to the bank their midterm and their annual report cards and we have a group in the bank that actually goes through these report cards to the extent that a student is not achieving the standards we set for the student, whether it is discipline, whether it is absenteeism, whether it is demerit, that child is brought into the bank and spoken to. And if the child falls consistently below then the parent is brought in and we have a discussion with the parent. And if it continues then obviously we have to take a decision with whether or not the student continues with the program. Thankfully we have had perhaps one or two students who did not finish this program. But by and large this program has been extremely successful because of the mentorship aspect of it and because of the ongoing upkeep and discussions we have with the students."

Ashton Perriott- 6th form Scholarship recipient
"I'm actually studying to be a technician, if not I can actually be a programmer or website builder."

"And how does this affect your chances of following your career."

Ashton Perriott
"It's a very great opportunity because now I can study and be that great technician I've always wanted to be."

Alicia Robinson- H. Schl Scholarship recipient
"I came from St. Ignatius Primary School and I am also happy for the scholarship because it helps my parents with a big help and it also helps them to be there for me and my other siblings."

Lyndon Guiseppi- Chairman, Belize Bank Ltd.
"Let me hasten to add that the scholarship is not a gift. A gift is something you give to someone when you have no expectation of anything in return; when there is no expectation of reciprocity. We have an expectation, however, of you. What we want essentially, is that our Belize Bank scholars, we want them to be known throughout the entire country of Belize as being the best, the brightest and the most talented group of individuals."

This marks the 7th year that the bank has been investing directly in student's education since their scholarship program was launched in 2012. A total of 120 scholarships that have been awarded since the inception of the program.
