Convicted Killer Pleads Guilty to Assaulting Journalist
posted (July 18, 2018)

He assaulted a journalist - and convicted murderer Byron James will spend time for it.

In February of last year, the 29 year-old James assaulted reporter Anita Nembhard while she was on the court beat. Well, today, James went before Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer and admitted to the court that indeed he punched her on the nose.

The incident happened on the very same day that he was found guilty of the murder of 29 year-old Frank Vasquez. Nembhard was snapping photographs of defendants, as she and the other court reporters do everyday. He was being escorted back to the police van to be taken to the Belize Central Prison, and he passed just close enough for him to strike Nembhard’s camera.  It hit her nose and caused a cut to her nose bridge.

He was charged with harm, to which he pleaded not guilty in the first instance. He changed his plea to guilty today, and Chief Magistrate Frazer sentenced him to spend 6 months in jail. He’s still awaiting sentencing from the Supreme Court for his murder conviction.
