Saldivar Stoic About Leadership Convention
posted (July 18, 2018)

Today's Citizen Security Summit gave us an opportunity to discuss a little bit of politics with John Saldivar. As viewers are aware, he has aspirations of being the leader of the UDP, and it is well known that he intends to challenge Patrick Faber in the leadership convention.

On Monday, we spoke with Faber about the leadership convention, and his campaign, and today the press asked Saldivar if he's actively canvassing for support. He said that much like his Cabinet colleague, the party's delegates will decide whether they want him for leader based on his performance as a cabinet minister.

He explained why he isn't pushing just yet for that leadership convention, for which a specific date hasn't been announced:

"Is there anything specific that you're doing to kind of gain that momentum?"

Hon. John Saldivar - Area Representative, Belmopan
"Not necessarily at this time, I believe that my work will show for itself, I guess I will say similar things to what Minister Faber has said, my work in my ministry, the new assignment that I've had in terms of the police department and the fight against crime. I think that will help to show the people of Belize the kind of skills that I bring to the table in terms of leadership and eventually like I've always said leadership isn't something that you go out and get or fight for, it is something that the people decide; that they want you to be their leader and if they find me to be that person, I'll be happy to accept the job."
