A Rare Murder Conviction
posted (July 20, 2018)
30 year-old Henry Jacobs, the man accused of the 2012 murder of Brian Welch was found guilty of murder today by Justice Marilyn Williams. Tonight, he is back in jail awaiting sentencing.

Jacobs stood trial without a jury in which Crown Counsel Rene Montero tried to prove to the court that he shot and killed 49 year-old Brian Welch, who was also known as "Yankee".

That murder happened on April 29, 2012, when a gunman opened fire on him on Central American Boulevard. He was hit to the mouth, the chest, and the abdomen area. He reportedly ran from his assailant, but he collapsed under a coconut tree, where he bled out and died.

The main witness in Jacobs' trial was a police officer who testified that he saw Jacobs and some other men having a dispute with Welch. The officer said that he saw Jacobs leave on a motorcycle and come back. A short while later, he heard gunshots - which led to Welch's death.

In his defense, Jacob told the court that he was nowhere near the scene. He said that he was at a farm at Mile 8 on the George Price Highway.

He called an alibi witness to confirm his story, but after consideration, Justice Williams rejected that alibi. The judge concluded that the crown proved their case against him, and she found him guilty of the crime of murder.

She has ordered that a social report, as well as a prison report be prepared for Jacobs, which she will consider in coming to an appropriate sentence.
