De La Ho’s Mystery Unravelled
posted (July 20, 2018)
Belizean currency trader Javier de la Ho Duarte is facing heavy charges in Guatemala after he was caught in Melchor with two AK-47 rifles, seventy-five rounds of ammunition and cash in an assortment of currencies including U.S. Belize dollars.

Now, 7News has learned that de la Ho Duarte is from Benque Viejo where he started out as a money changer at the Western border. But, he reportedly hit the big time after he teamed up with a Chinese businessman in Belmopan and they became the sole agents for a Modern Cigarettes in Belize. The Modern brand is imported from China and reportedly enters Belize's free zone in large volumes - as many as 50 to 60 containers per month - according to our sources. Now, there are 200 cases per container, so that's 10 to 12 thousand cases a month. These are not sold locally, and they are all "exported" to Mexico and Guatemala. Of course, in this case, export is a euphemism for "smuggled". It is a robust trade involving large cash transactions, and reports say De La Ho is a key player in this.

He was caught at his mother in law's home in Melchor but keeps a residence in Benque Viejo. He also has Guatemalan citizenship.
