posted (July 23, 2018)
And the weekend's other murder came out of a chopping which happened on Sunday in Dangriga Town. Around midday Calvin Figueroa and Anthony Picart got into a machete war - which left both men badly injured.

Picart died last night at the western Regional, while Calvin Figueroa is in a serious condition at the KHMH under police guard.

Police told us what they know so far:

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head - NCIB
"Dangriga police were called to the southern regional hospital on Sunday 20th July, shortly before 12:30pm where they observed 2 persons with multiple chop wounds to the body. One of those persons was identified as Anthony Picart, 52 years old, whilst the other person was identified Calvin Figueroa, 29 year old labourer of Dangriga Town. Initial police investigation revealed that both persons were socializing along with others at a shed on St. Vincent Street, when an altercation ensued between the 2 persons. As a result it is said that Mr. Picart took a machete from off his bicycle where he inflicted a chop wound to Calvin Figueroa, who shortly thereafter was able to disarm Mr. Picart and as a result he inflicted one chop wound to Mr. Picart and in the process of Mr. Picart attempting to make his escape, he was pursued by Figueroa who inflicted several other chop wounds to him. Figueroa was later disarmed by several witnesses who were in the area."

"Both persons were treated at the southern regional hospital, where Figueroa was transported to the KHMH. Mr. Picart underwent surgery at the southern regional hospital and was in the process of being transferred to the western regional hospital where he later died on arrival. Police have recorded several statements into this matter and our investigations in on going. Mr. Figueroa is under police guard at KHMH."

"Is there an element of self-defense that police have to contend with? Is the gentleman claiming self-defense?"

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head - NCIB
"Not as yet. The investigation is at its early stages and if you were able to listen to the facts you would see that Figueroa was able to disarmed the deceased and then pursue him where he inflicted the injuries."

Police say that they will gather all evidence and witness statements in this case, and they intend to send the case file to the DPP's Office for instruction on how to proceed against Figueroa.
