Police Say It Was a Textbook Detention
posted (July 26, 2018)
Well, the police have a different take on the entire ordeal. They say they played it by the books against belligerent residents. Today at the weekly police press briefing, Commander of Operations Chester Williams detailed the police's version of events and applauded the cops for finally bringing Brown into custody.

DCP Chester Williams, Commander - Operations
"The police received a complaint from the mother of Mr. Brian Brown and we had been in search of him for the past two days, several attempts were made to get him into custody but to every time the police goes to his home to detain him, he would normally go inside and lock himself behind that high fence and would prevent the police from gaining access to his yard. Well today the police were not up for that. Directive was given that Brian Brown should be brought into custody and based on that, they went to the area and upon police arrival, they began to stone police with bottles and other projectiles. The police were very patient eventually we were able to jump the fence and gain access to the yard, having gained access to yard, Brown then again locked himself inside the home. With the use of the white smoke, not tear gas, white smoke, the police threw that inside the house."

"Brown was found hiding under the bed, he was taken under the bed and because of the manner in which he was behaving, the police had to tie him in a sheet to prevent him from causing injuries to the police and he was escorted out of the area and to the hospital as he had received scratches on his hands when he was being taken from under the bed by the police. Brian Brown is in good health. He was not shot by police not with lethal nor non- lethal bullets. There was a child who was in the area who was also throwing missiles to the police. That child was brought into the police station and spoken too strongly and subsequently released."

"So the police as far as I am concerned acted within the scope of the law in how the matter was dealt with today and I commend the officers for the tactic that they used in getting him into custody this morning."

As you heard, both the residents and police gave the same account as to how Brown was taken down the stairs - he was wrapped in a sheet. Williams would not get into Reneau's account of police dragging her down the stairs. Also, contrary to what residents thought, police did not shoot Brown, he just got scratches when they pulled him from under the bed.

Now we have some background in relation to the charge that Brown is facing - Threat of death. As you heard in Williams's comments, Brown's own mother made a report against him. He is accused of threatening to kill her and other relatives over a monetary dispute. Going back to April, Williams has tried to mediate this family feud but Brown simply won't hear it. He just wants his money back. Williams gave us more details.

DCP Chester Williams
"Brian Brown is adamant that his family members owe him money and he wants the money to be paid and he had made it categorically clear that if his money is not paid, he will kill his family including his mother, his sister and his brother and that he has soldiers who can do it for him and so as a police department we can't take his threat lightly."

"I will tell you his mother lives in fear every day, fearing that he will do her something or send someone to do her something."
