The Battle For PUP Proprietorship: Arthur Swipes Back At Eamon
posted (August 1, 2018)

Last night, you saw the stinging remarks that PUP Legal Advisor Eamon Courtenay made against Arthur Saldivar, who's trying to litigate his way into the PUP's Belmopan standard bearer convention. Courtenay minced no words when he said that Saldivar needs accept that the party doesn't want him as a standard bearer, and that his lawsuit to force the leadership's hand is "misguided".

We contacted Saldivar last night and this morning requesting an interview, which he initially agreed to, but later in the day, he said that his committee was meeting to discuss a response, and that they would get in touch with us later. Well, they did so this evening by way of a press release which reads, quote, "The Constituents of Belmopan and the Committee to Elect Arthur Saldivar were shocked and appalled by the disgusting display of arrogance, contempt, and disregard for propriety, discipline and unity exhibited by… Courtenay last night… He chose to attack the most viable candidate in the Belmopan PUP race." End quote.

Saldivar's committee continues that Courtenay's comments "exposes a deep rooted rot that has been infecting" the party and Belmopan Constituency for 10 years now. The Committee reasons that the PUP "elite" have been systematically taking down candidates such as Agripino Cawich and Sam Waight.

The Committee, in their press release, then launches an attack against Courtenay saying, quote, "This is 2018, and our Party has been in opposition for 10 years. The vast majority of the country and the supporters of the PUP are suffering due to the policies of this ruling UDP Government, but not Eamon Courtenay. Eamon Courtenay has made tens of millions of dollars under the UDP while representing Michael Ashcroft in the BTL case, the UHS case, and many others involving the Government of Belize." End quote.

The Committee then dials it up a notch by making allegations which we cannot air for legal reasons. They then assert that it is the members and voters at the Belmopan Convention who should be the ultimate-decision making body to determine which candidate is "fit and proper" to represent them. The Committee then challenges Courtenay to offer himself as a candidate in the convention.

They say, quote, "If Courtenay feels so strongly about his position, there is nothing stopping him from applying to run in Belmopan…against our candidate. We would welcome his participation, until then, he should respect the Constitution of our Party, and abide by its rules like everyone else." End quote.
