Taking a Progressive View on Controversial cane Second Payment
posted (August 1, 2018)

Last week we told you about the disappointment in the Sugar Industry after the second payment came in.  It was very low, and the largest growers’ group, which is the Sugar Cane Farmers - was looking for someone to blame, namely ASR/BSI.

But the Progressive Sugar Cane Producers association struck a distinctly different note today.  They say that the second payment is low but not unexpected based on the global reality.  Their statement says, quote, “this is bad news for all cane farmers and with ninety (90) percent of sugar production being sold on the basis of low global market prices, then we- the tree association and the mill - with support from the government of Belize, must work together to successfully survive in this economic environment.”

They soberly add, quote, “we knew for some time that this was coming, and while some farmers prepared, the industry, collectively, (was) slow to take action for the necessary reform.” End quote.

The association says it will “support efforts to lobby for the uniform application of a common external tariff on all sugar imported from outside CARICOM in order to develop this market as a viable outlet for sugar products from Belize.”
