posted (August 2, 2018)
Last night, we told you about the tragic drowning of 37 year-old David Alamilla, the well-known furniture builder from Belama in Belize City. Around 11 yesterday morning, he and his crew were heading out for a job on St. George's Caye. They were in a 32 foot vessell, pulling a 26-foot skiff, which was carrying a huge cargo of lumber.

They were a short distance from Moho Caye when when the vessel being towed started taking on water. Alamilla and one of his co-workers were trying to raise the boat, but ran into difficulties on a rough and windy day. And that's when Alamilla suffered an asthma attack, and died, gasping in the arms of his co worker.

This morning police said that they found no signs of violence on Alamilla's body...

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino, C.I.B., Eastern Division
"On the 1st August, sometime 1:30pm, police were called out to Dolphin Park. They were notified by Coast Guard personnel that they were in search of an individual who had submerge in the water somewhere near to Moho Caye. They had retrieve the body of a male and had transported him to the Dolphin Park. Police arrived at the scene and saw the body of David Alamilla, 37 years old of Belama. He was motionless and lifeless. From what police understand is that Mr. Alamilla was in a vessel travelling to St. George's Caye. It was 2 vessels; one was towing another vessel. The one that was being towed was carrying building materials. The vessel that was being towed started to take in water. As a result Mr. Michael Ingram jumped into the other vessel and attempted to bail out the water. He was unsuccessful and as a result one, Mr. Andrew Middleton and Mr. Alamilla jumped in to assist him and what we've made to understand is that Mr. Alamilla is asthmatic and may have had an asthmatic attack and that may have contributed to him going under water. The body was retrieve. We did not observe any signs of violence on the body and the postmortem examination is scheduled."

Alamilla was a father of 2, and he acted as a mentor to youths in his community.
