It’s known as the office with the longest, most frustrating lines - but the Vital Statistics Office in Belize City was on lockdown today. A sign posted outside says, quote, “the system is being serviced,” which is not what we heard.
7News has confirmed that the Director, Patricia Hinkson was given her letter of termination after 5:00 pm yesterday. She was a contract officer who had just signed her contract a few months ago.
But, according to our sources, the political directorate wasn’t happy with the timeliness of how re-registration documents were being processed, amongst other problems, evidence by the inordinate lines. So, quite suddenly, Hinkson was sent home.
The Office will re-open tomorrow with a new Director, reported to be one Ishelle Murillo.
Politically, it’s caused some confusion because Hinkson was thought to enjoy the friendship of the Prime Minister’s sister who will succeed him in Queen Square, Denise “Sister B” Barrow. That would seem to afford protection to any contract officer, but, as we well know, political favour can be fickle.
