The National Forensic Science Service has received an $85 thousand-US-dollar donation from the United Nations Regional Center for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
That organization, also known as UNLIREC for short, has provided Belizean law enforcement with training and equipment to counter the country's illegal firearms problem for the past 10 years.
They've been trying to assist the National Forensic Science Service to improve its capacity to assist in the prosecution of gun crimes. This time around, UNLIREC has gifted the Forensic Science Service with brand new weapons firing range. Previously, the ballistics experts at that office had to test weapons suspected to be used in crimes in a part of their compound that was not exactly fit to serve as a gun range.
Today, the Government of Belize invited the press to attend the handing over ceremony for the containerized gun range, and our news team was there. Daniel Ortiz reports:
UNLIREC has been able to assist Belize in the last 10 years through the financial support of the Governments of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and the British High Commission in Belize.
