US Leans on Belize For Help With Nicaragua

Our Central American neighbor, Nicaragua has been in turmoil for months. 350 persons have died in an uprising against President Daniel Ortega and his Sandinista party.

And now the United States wants Belize - as pro-tem president of SICA to help resolve the crisis. Yesterday, U.S. Senior Advisor for Central America Ambassador Todd Robinson met with Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington. According to a statement from the US Embassy, they discussed, quote, "common concerns over the breakdown of law and order in Nicaragua and other regional security issues." Ambassador Robinson is gathering support for an OAS working group to promote a peaceful resolution of the ongoing crisis in Nicaragua.

In his meeting with PM Barrow, Robinson emphasized Belize's important role in supporting the OAS working group and exercising its leadership in the region.

There has been no statement from the government of Belize.
