Quo Vadis, Boots? Et Tu, Elodio?
posted (August 9, 2018)
And keeping it on the ICJ referendum, the press got a chance to ask 2 UDP parliamentarians about their personal views on whether or not Belize should go to the ICJ to settle Guatemala's claim over the country.

Here's what Elodio Aragon Jr., the Orange Walk East Area Rep., had to say today when he was asked for his opinion today:

Hon. Elodio Aragon
"Going to the ICJ is not a political issue. This is not a UDP/PUP stuff. I believe this is a nationalist issue and I think every Belizean must educate themselves, must become informed so that they are able to do an educated decision when the time comes. I know we are going to referendum 10th April next year and so I ask every Belizean to be educated on this matter. I personally will tell you right now, I believe personally that we should go to the ICJ. But again that is my personal opinion. I believe that every citizen of this country has to make up their mind if they are for it or are not for it. The government is the employee of the people of Belize and whatever the people of Belize will say at the end of the day in terms of the referendum - that will be done."

And while the Aragon was forthcoming, the retiring Port Loyola Area Rep, Boots Martinez, was not willing to disclose how he is minded to vote, if the referendum were to take place tomorrow:

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez, Minister of Human Development
"Right now I consider that to be a private matter and so for me I consider it to be a private matter. I am still like everybody else, getting my facts together, doing a lot of reading, looking out to see what the education campaign would be like. So that is a private matter for a retired politician."

The UDP Party Leader Dean Barrow has said it will allow its elected representatives a conscience vote.
