Armed Guatemalan Caught in Caracol
posted (August 13, 2018)

A Guatemalan national was caught by law enforcement in the Caracol Archaeological Reserve over the weekend. It was in a part of the forest reserve that often attracts illegal activities that the conservationists try to prevent, and he caught the attention of the rangers who spotted him because he was armed with a loaded rifle.

Police told us more today about the detention of 27 year-old Jaime Calderon:

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"On Saturday the 11th of August, first rangers handed over to San Ignacio police one Jaime Calderon, 27 years Guatemalan and our investigation revealed that Calderon was inside Belize's territory in the Caracol area and at the time was armed with a 22 rifle which was loaded with 5 rounds of ammunition. The ranger patrol interceptedhim and he could not produce a license for the weapon hence the reason for his detention. He has since been arrested and charged by San Ignacio police for the offence of kept unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition."

Daniel Ortiz
"Is it believed that this person was conducting illegal activities in the Caracol Archaeological Reserve area?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"At this time I would not be in a position to say other than to say that he was found within the Caracol National Park."

It is expected that he will be arrested, charged and arraigned for the weapon, and other appropriate offenses, such as illegal entry.
