Belize Girls Football Team Represent in Florida
posted (August 13, 2018)

10 days ago, the Belize national U-15 football team left for Bradenton, Florida. They competed in the CONCACAF Girls Championship tournament. That tournament ran from August 6th to the 11th, and while they were away, the Baby Jaguars played 4 matches.

In the first game against St. Kitts and Nevis, team Belize was defeated by St. Kitts and Nevis with a final score of 4 to 3. In the second game against Martinique, the U-15 girls lost by a bigger margin of 3-nil, but by the third game, they were able to make a strong showing, defeating the US Virgin Islands with a final score of 4 to zero.

That meant that Belize came in third in Group F, and so they were matched up against Dominica, another 3rd-place team from Group G.  By that time, however, Team Belize was unable to advance to the next round because only the first and second place from the different groups qualified.

And in that final game, which we are told was more like a friendly match, Belize managed to defeat Dominica 2 to 1.

They travelled back to Belize on Saturday, and our news team got a chance to catch up with them at the PGIA that afternoon. Here’s what several different members of the team told us about their experience in Florida:

As we told you, Khalydia Velasquez, who played striker for the Baby Jaguars, became the youngest player to score in an officially sanctioned FIFA international tournament. She is only 11 years-old.
