Police Capture Nephew in El Progresso Chopping
posted (August 15, 2018)

In last night's newscast, we told you about the disturbing case coming out of El Progresso, a remote village in western part of the Cayo District. It's not a part of the country that regularly makes the newscast, but yesterday, a 42 year-old resident, Israel Tesucum, was fatally chopped by his 25 year-old nephew.

A family on family killing is unsettling enough, but more upsetting than that is that Tesecum's nephew attacked him for no apparent reason, and in the presence of his grandparents and other members of his family.

Our news team travelled today to El Progresso looking for answers, and Daniel Ortiz found out today that the grieving family is as puzzled as anyone else about the cruel killing of a disabled man. Here's that story:

The peace inside the home of the Tesecum family was disturbed yesterday, when 42 year-old Israel Tesucum was fatally chopped by his nephew. The other family members, who saw the incident unfolding, all say that the deadly attack was unprovoked.

Another major aggravating factor is that the victim was disabled and unable to defend himself. He's also described as an individual who kept out of trouble and mostly to himself.

Allan Tesucum - Brother of the Deceased
"Israel is a nice guy. He doesn't have problems with anybody. He is here in my house. We live together. We speak to each other. He's a nice guy. He doesn't go any do things. He stays home, and relaxes well, we talk good."

In stark contrast, there is his nephew who chopped him in the back of the neck. The other relatives all agree that he was the member of the family who brought problems and strife into their home.

Allan Tesucum
"He always come and threatens me and threatens me several times."

Emilia Flores - Sister-in-law of the Deceased (Translated)
"It's not only now that he comes here and cause a lot of problems. Even my niece he causes problems with. He throws stones at her, and when she comes here, he beats her, and other craziness."

But, the incident has caused them the most grief so far happened at around 9 o'clock yesterday morning, when majority of the relatives were in the house having their morning meal. The switch, from a quiet family breakfast, to a chopping murder with loved-ones as eyewitnesses, happened within minutes.

Emilia Flores (Translated)
"When I got here, my mother-in-law and father-in-law were having breakfast. I was sitting down when the young man who chopped Tesucum came out from where he was cooking, and chopped Tesucum who was sitting in a corner, having breakfast as well, behind my mother-in-law and father-in-law were sitting. He just chopped him and escaped."

Israel was left bleeding and bleeding, while we called the police to take him to the hospital.

Allan Tesucum
"He got chopped on the neck. My nephew did that. He got chopped on his neck, and they rushed him to the hospital. After that, I heard he passed away."

Daniel Ortiz
"Did he and your nephew have any sorts of disagreements? Anything, any kind of hard talk, any kind of problems at all…"

Allan Tesucum
"Nothing at all, nothing. He is innocent, totally innocent."

As to the whereabouts of his attacker, no one knows exactly, but members of the family believe that he is hiding out in the jungles of the Cayo district, a place he is very familiar with.

Daniel Ortiz
"Have police managed to pick up your nephew?"

Allan Tesucum
"He escaped. They tried to catch him. Until now, they still haven't caught him yet."

Daniel Ortiz
"So, he's still out in…"

Allan Tesucum
"No, I don't think he is in the village. I think he is in the bush, and that's why the police are in the back there at Barton Cree."

And just before the start of news, San Ignacio Police announced that with the help of villages from El Progresso, they managed to capture Israel Tesucum's nephew. We're now able to identify him a 25 year-old Bartemio Tesucum. Police say that he was hiding out in the forests around the village. It is expected that he will be arrested and charged with his uncle's murder at the earliest convenience.

Some members of the family suspect that he may be suffering from some kind of mental illness, though he has never gotten any medical diagnosis or help. The family tolerated him in their home simply because he is a blood relative.

And turning back to Israel Tesucum, his family tells us that he was unable to work because he has a deformity where his hands and fingers don't work properly, and his limbs don't have the strength to do simple tasks for himself.
