A New Perspective on HIV
posted (August 15, 2018)

There is a magic pill that can delay or even prevent HIV. That was the main topic at today’s workshop hosted by Gilead Sciences along with the National Aids Commission and Special Envoy for Women and Children Kim Simplis-Barrow. Here is more from the event.

Elizabeth Cerqueria-Murray - Senior Director, Gilead Sciences
"The reaction that I usually receive when I'm speaking with ministers of health and other key health decision makers is oh no, seems like it could promote promiscuity etc. Ministries of health and other decision makers in health understand it’s a component of prevention and that the program is quite comprehensive and specific. It is not an intervention for prevention of HIV that is standalone - it's a component of a larger intervention program. Having said that, it is a medicine, one pill, takes it once a day for individuals who are at high risk for contracting the disease. So this is for negative HIV individuals to prevent them from becoming ever positive."
