PUP Southern Caucus Says No To ICJ
posted (August 16, 2018)

The PUP southern caucus has come out swinging against the ICJ.  A rare release from the group says its members are, quote, "firmly against going to the International Court of Justice."

The release makes the argument, quote, "The Southern Caucus states that as the area of our country that stands the most to be affected in the event of an unfavorable ruling, it is an imperative that they declare their position... while Guatemala has nothing to lose and only to gain, it is Belizeans on a whole, and Southern Belizeans in particular, who have nothing to gain and everything to lose."

It concludes, wearily, quote, "the Guatemalans want the South, the richest, most beautiful, most pristine part of our country."

The southern caucus says it will continue to conduct internal consultations in their villages and towns.

It's a bold and emphatic stance, and possibly indicative of a rift within the PUP which is far more reserved on its position - which, to our knowledge - has not yet been finalized.  It's also a blow for the "YEs to the ICJ" campaign since the PUP is the mass party which controls three of the four southern constituencies.
