New Police Booths for the Southside
posted (August 16, 2018)

There is no easy solution to crime. No matter how many boots are on the ground or how many strategic checkpoints are set up in the city, the fight against crime will never end. But that doesn’t mean the police won’t do all they can to curb crime. So what they did is set up two new police booths, one in the Mayflower area and one at the corner of Louise Bevans and Unity Streets. They were donated by Central TV and Internet. The commander of Region One Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett told us more about the importance of these booths for crime prevention and of course, cop comfort.

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett, O.C. Eastern Division Region One
"The larger plan is to replace all the tents with booths because we're maybe in the mid of the hurricane season and the rainy season and officers continue to complain that they are exposed to the elements at the wee hours of the night. So we have to be doing something for them because how could we get optimum production if we don't create the enabling environment for them to create the correct working environment for them. So this is just part of our way of saying thank you for what you are doing and we as the administrators, as the leaders we are looking after your welfare, so we're happy to be doing this. Central TV and internet has partnered with us and we're so pleased to do this. It's come at a cost of 3 thousand dollars but because it’s for police use, we get it at a reduced price at 500 dollars per each booth. One is here at Mayflower and we're here to stay because we want to defuse all the tension, we want to continue to reduce crime and the other will be on the corner of Louis Bevans and Unity Street."

Christopher Hudson, Network Manager, Central TV and Internet
"It is the company’s hope that the donation of these 2 booths will aid the police department in assisting the public and to create a safer future for Belize generally - present and future. We would like to thank the police department for offering the opportunity for us to partner with them with this donation. Long story short it will generally uplift the community and the company see it as something where as we could really put off a good image."

Belize Electricity Limited has pledged to install electricity in all the booths. The next booth is expected to be installed in the Conch Shell Bay area
