The Other Side of The Tenth Bram Cancellation
posted (August 17, 2018)

Earlier this week, you heard the PUP city council explain why it's been forced to cancel the Tenth bram due to underfunding from the UDP chaired National Celebration Commission.

But the commission today sent out a release to say it's not political discrimination, it's just hard times. The release explains, quote, "This year, a number of key partners either reduced their donations or provided in-kind support thus impacting the overall budget of the Commission."

But that's not even the whole story. The Commission release says that all municipalities and stakeholders were asked to submit a plan of proposed activities and events they hoped to host, along with a budget. But, last week Friday, the City Council sent an email saying that they would be removing the 10thBram and Municipal Fair Playbill of September events due to budgetary constraints.

The NCC says it was, quote, "blind-sided by their decision to cancel the 10th of September Municipal Bram. That decision was made solely by the Belize City Council. The financial support that was allocated to the Belize City Council is based on their submitted budget request, which included the Municipal Bram....
As such, we were disheartened to hear both Mayor and Deputy Mayor incorrectly blaming NICH...for the cancellation of the Bram during their interviews, when that decision, was outside the purview of NICH and (The Celebrations Commission."

The release closes by saying, quote, "decisions of what events and activities take place and are celebrated are solely that of the respective municipalities and key stakeholders. The attempts to lay blame on NCC or NICH is uncalled for and not in the spirit of cooperation." End quote.
