Hon. Saldivar To Frontier
posted (August 17, 2018)

It is well known that there is a weekly change over of BDF soldiers at the Cadenas Conservation post who stand watch over some of Belize’s southernmost territories, which sits near the border with Guatemala. It’s one of the toughest areas of the country to maintain a patrol presence, and to get there, they must travel up the Sarstoon River, with the Guatemalan Armed Forces monitoring their comings and goings.

Well on Wednesday, National Security Minister John Saldivar took the trip himself and visited the BDF troops who were posted there.

A press release from the Government says that since 1993, the BDF soldiers who have served at Cadenas have known the grueling trek to the post. They must hike up and down a steep mountain side, to get to the top where Cadenas sits and which overlooks the terrain. The National Security Minister, who has made the trip several times, has decided that a stairway will be built, so that the soldiers can traverse to the top easier. It is estimated that at the end of the construction, this stairway to Cadenas will have over a thousand steps.

Saldivar went back there today to see the work in progress, and he also took the time out to visit Gracias A Dios, and he thank the soldiers for their sacrifice in service of the country.
